Sometimes a Little Push is all That’s Needed… and Other Times it’s a Big One

I’ll be the first to admit it… I can be a little lazy sometimes.  OK, maybe “a little” isn’t quite as accurate as “a lot” but it sounds better.

I have a bunch of ideas… things that I know I have to do… things that I want to do (not always the same things) … and all that’s really left is to prioritize… and DO them.

That’s never been a strength of mine.

I let someone down recently.  I see that now.

I have a lot of catching up to do.

Oink! (or How I Seem to Have Gotten Bigger, and not in a Good Way)

I don’t seem to have done much in the way of blogging lately.  Apparently that’s because I’m spending most of my time stuffing my face with whatever I can get my hands on.  OINK!

If you had asked me how much I weigh, I would have told you 225lbs…   If you had asked me how much I weigh in KILOGRAMS… I would have laughed at your silly question.  Does anyone know how much they weigh in kilograms?  I can’t even begin to figure that out.  But 225 pounds… now that I understand.

Over the years I’ve seen my weight fluctuate very little.  225lbs give or take.  When I was diligent with MyFitnessPal, I had lost about 12lbs.  When I was being a little lazier than normal, I saw it peak at 230lbs.  That was my danger zone.  230lbs was enough to make me swear off Coke for a day or two.  I considered 185lbs to be my goal weight.  230 was just too far from that.

Imagine my surprise when I stepped on the scale last week and saw 238lbs staring back up at me?!?  WTF??  Who’s been messing with my scale?!  It’s bad enough that someone’s been shrinking my clothes in the dryer, but now they’re messing with my scale too!?  What’s next, sawing the legs of my favourite chair to cause it to collapse when I sit down?  Nice try, but I’m onto you!

The next day I decided to weigh myself again.  Obviously the previous attempt had been some freakish anomaly.  Or maybe not.  If my scale could talk, it probably wouldn’t even have bothered coming up with anything witty…  a simple groan would have sufficed.

240.2lbs

OINK!

to be continued…  I need a snack…

Becoming Lincoln

121108_HIST_Lincoln.jpg.CROP.rectangle3-largeI had a dream the other night… a very long, very detailed, very weird dream..  And when I woke up at 3am, all I could think of was “I have to write a blog post about this!  I’ll call it Becoming Lincoln“.  And then I fell asleep.  But when I woke up later I actually remembered the dream perfectly.. and again thought “I have to write a blog post about this… Becoming Lincoln“.

Well… I mentioned it to a couple of people… and now… here it is…

First, let me say… I have absolutely no idea what prompted this dream.  I haven’t seen the movie Lincoln.  I don’t really know much about the man except that he was tall and he liked the theatre.  Oh yeah, something about a war and some slaves.

Anyway… back to the dream…

It was very Quantum Leapish… Somehow I was in Lincoln’s body, and I was aware that I wasn’t really Lincoln and that I was in the past.  Everyone saw me as Lincoln, but when I looked in the mirror, I looked like my regular self… except that I was quickly starting to turn into the man I was pretending to be!  I had lots of black hair, and a beard that wouldn’t stop growing.  I spent my time looking for a black top hat because I knew that I should have one before giving some important speech to a whole bunch of people.  And then part way through my speech I stopped and left the stage to go to the defence of a black servant who was being belittled by an obnoxious rich white politician.  I only make a point of mentioning the race of each person because I don’t think it’s a coincidence in this particular dream.

That’s pretty much all I remember, but I know that when I woke up the memory was very vivid.  Thankfully I didn’t dream of being at the theatre… that would not have ended well at all.

Renewed Interest in Netflix.ca

I’ve had a Netflix account for 2 years.  In that time I think that I’ve watched 1… maybe 2 movies.  Why get a Netflix account then?  It’s great for TV shows for the kids.  That’s pretty much about it…  or so I thought.

I never really gave Netflix much of a chance.  It was just too easy to go and download the latest  movie and tv releases for free.  Netflix was just filled with crap that I wasn’t interested in.  Again.. or so I thought.

Lately I’ve been moving away from torrents and trying instead to be legit.  I’ve purchased a couple of movies and tv shows through the iTunes store.  And I’ve started looking at Netflix again.  And guess what?  I was wrong about it!

While it’s certainly true that Netflix does not have the latest and greatest titles immediately upon their release, they still have an impressive collection of content for viewing.  There are plenty of B and C rated movies, but then there are big releases like The Hunger Games yesterday… which just so happens to be one of the movies that I purchased recently.  Crap.

As for TV shows, I’ve been getting caught up with everything from Arrested Development to Californication to Star Trek – The Next Generation.  And if you think that Netflix is strictly in the business of offering content that you’ve already seen a hundred times in reruns elsewhere… Season 4 of Arrested Development is debuting on Netflix… not broadcast/cable networks!  Regardless of your thoughts on the show, the fact that Netflix has the sole distribution rights to a mainstream title proves that it is a legitimate contender in the content provider world.  In fairness, this is not the first show to air exclusively online… this will become more commonplace in the future.  Look out, traditional media!

And Netflix’ best feature?  The fact that it streams to almost any online device imaginable!  I watch it on my iPhone.. iPad.. computers.. Apple TV… the kids watch it on their iPods… all of this for only $8/month?

Awesome!
