Sia – Chandelier

Published September 25, 2014 - 2 Comments

This is something a little different for me. I’m showcasing a music video strictly for the video itself. Sure, the song is ok, but it’s not going to end up in my Top 100. But the video… wow… the young girl is 11 year old dancing sensation Maddie Ziegler, from a show called Dancing Moms. I’ve never heard of the show before, and I only know it because I had to look up who she was. The video is shot in one continuous take, and Maddie never stops. I don’t know who choreographed this routine, but it’s amazingly weird, creepy, and genius all at the same time.

I Need a Tide to Go Stick!

Breakfast.  The most important meal of the day.  Also the messiest!  I realized after eating my bacon and eggs that I was wearing egg yolk on my nice peachy golf shirt.  So the the rest of the day I’ll be walking about like this guy.  Love this commercial!

School is More Important Than Work

Published September 22, 2014 - 3 Comments

mcdonalds_paypal_lgStanding in line at McDonalds and I watched as a young girl showed up for her shift while one of her co-workers jokingly chastised her for apparently leaving school early to come to work.

“You left early! School is more important than work!  School is more important than work!”

It was obvious that the girl was mocking something that they’d probably been told many times.  That ever-present conundrum of how to be in two places at once.  Stay in class, yet keep your boss happy and get to work on time.

I wished that I could have said something to these young people that would have made sense to them, but I know it never would.  The wisdom that we acquire in life is wasted upon the young, just as it was when we were that age.

Sure, you laugh now… but really, school is more important than work.  Stay in school.  Study.  Learn.  Apply.

And one day you will be saying the exact same thing to someone younger than yourself.

Trust me.

Scotland Votes to Remain Part of the United Kingdom

Should Scotland be an independent country?

55.3% NO.

44.7% YES.

I woke up at 5am to use the bathroom, and checked my phone for the results of yesterday’s Scottish referendum.  And there it was.  A majority of Scots had rejected the idea of breaking off and forming their own independent country.

I have to admit that I was more than a little surprised.  I have no ties to Scotland whatsoever, so I say this purely as an observer, but from what I had read prior to the vote, I really figured that they were going in the other direction.  It feels to me that there is a big move around the world where every group of people thinks that it can do a better job if it breaks away from the other groups.  That’s obviously not the case, and I think that it’s completely reasonable to retain one’s national identity among a larger union.

I imagine that there are probably some hard feelings in Scotland right now.  I truly hope not to read anything like “it was the ethnic vote” like other referendums in the past.  Now is not the time for absurd finger-pointing.  Now is the time to work together to make changes that benefit all citizens of Great Britain.

Group hug.

Burned by Air Miles… Again!

Published September 16, 2014 - 2 Comments

220px-Air_Miles_Program_LogoI’ve been with Air Miles since the beginning.  Although I’ve never had any illusions of travelling the world on their dime, I’ve cashed out a few times for some nice gifts.  The Sobeys gift cards came in extremely handy when money was tight.  The iTunes gift cards were an incredible way of topping up my music and apps.  Air Miles has always treated me well.

I remember a little while ago when they introduced their Cash program.  Instead of accumulating points to put toward a trip or luxury gift, you could use them as a cash discount right at the time of purchase.  Sounded interesting, but I didn’t pay too much attention.  I was happy with how my current Dream Rewards worked.

Imagine my sudden irritation today when I popped into my Air Miles account to check and see how close I was to get another iTunes gift card and discovered that the gift card section was completely gone – replaced by Air Miles Cash.  For 95 Air Miles Cash, I can now get an instant $10 off my iTunes purchases.  That’s fine and dandy, but I don’t have any Air Miles Cash points, I have 223 Dream Rewards points.  Well there must be a way to convert them? Nope.  (I believe that when the program was first announced, Air Miles did provide a way to convert Dream Rewards to Cash… but that seems to have been a limited time offer)

I changed my account so I will now accumulate Air Miles Cash, but that doesn’t help me with the 223 Dream Rewards that I have.  Do you know what you can get with 223 Dream Rewards? Squat! No gift cards, no magazine subscriptions, nothing!  I DID discover that the Movie Night for Two is still available for 200 Dream Rewards, but they made such a big promotion of it also being part of the Cash program, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gone from the Dream Rewards catalog soon.  Better get it while you can!

I am now the proud owner of 23 useless Dream Reward Miles that now expire in 5 years.

Thanks Air Miles.

It’s been awhile since I’ve written anything.  I guess that I’ve been focussing on different things.  A newsletter for the pickle blog.  A zillion updates in Buffer for Twitter, Facebook, even Google+ now.  Oh, and then there’s Day One, a fantastic journal program that allows me to jot my thoughts down completely separate from the blog.  So I guess that I’m still writing.  I’m just not writing as much HERE.

Looking at the current Top 25, there are some things that stand out.  Most of the ones near the top are on my Summer 2014 playlist, so it makes sense that they would have more plays than most of the other songs.  There are a couple of surprises though.  Lose You from Pete Yorn and Desire by Ryan Adams are both songs that I Shazamed  from episodes of House.  Neither of them are what I would call “happy” songs, which is probably why I fell in love with them.  Not saying that I’m not happy!  But I like to have my reflective time… and that usually entails some music that’s not exactly upbeat.

Judging from the bottom of the list, I must have had a few reflective times.
