Finally Fixed My iPhone

Published September 24, 2010 - 1 Comment

I’ve had the replacement screen kit for a couple of weeks.  I’ve had the time.  What I’ve lacked was the desire to take apart my iPhone for fear of not being able to get everything back together again!  I mean, technically, it still worked.  It wasn’t pretty, but it worked.  What I didn’t want to happen was to get it all apart, get frustrated, and say the hell with it… That would mean going to the nearest retailer to get a replacement… several hundred dollars later, I would be the proud new owner of the new iPhone 4.

But first.. I had to give it a shot…

I watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to replace the screen before I even started.  Unfortunately the one that I liked the most was how to replace the LCD, not the glass screen… something I did not realize until they went in a direction that I wasn’t expecting.  Once I realized my mistake and found the proper video, I discovered that I required a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the glue that held the broken glass to the mounting.  Umm…  not the easiest thing to find at 3am at work.

I’ll tell ya one thing… although these videos show only one person doing all the work, a second pair of hands is almost a necessity, especially when trying to use the hair dryer and separate the glass.  They make it look so easy… they lie.

I eventually got it all put back together with minimal permanent damage.  There’s a tiny little white dot that I missed on the inside of the glass.  No one else would probably notice it, but it’ll drive me nuts.  And the top and bottom are just a tiny fraction misaligned… you can see one corner that doesn’t quite fit together perfectly, and you can notice the extra ridge when you push the home button.  It’s slight… but it’s there.  And guess what?  I don’t care!  It works!  And I don’t plan on making a career out of repairing these things!  It was a royal pain in the ass, and I hope that next time I hold onto the damn thing better.  Any bets on how long before my iPhone goes skipping along the pavement again?

When that happens… it’s time for a new one…
