Remove the Facebook Ticker With Adblock Plus

UPDATE Oct 18:  I’ve been told that this fix no longer works.  Facebook has apparently changed things again.  Need I mention how much I dislike Facebook again?

Still using Facebook to stay in contact with all your friends?  Sorry to hear that.  There’s a better option out there (Google+) but I’ll save that lesson for another day.  Since you are still using Facebook, you’ve probably encountered their latest enhancement… the social ticker.  This lovely gem sits on the side of your Facebook experience and continuously scrolls random updates, while you try to concentrate on whatever it is you’re supposed to be doing.  Facebook could have been kind enough to offer a simple way of disabling this annoyance.  They did not.  Thankfully there are some very intelligent (and very vocal) people out there who dislike having their familiar Facebook layout tinkered with.  You can argue whether or not Facebook users have any rights until you’re blue in the face.  It’s a free service, and at the end of the day, Facebook will do what Facebook wants to do.  At that point, you have three options.

  1. Continue to use the service as Facebook has designed it.
  2. Pack up and leave Facebook, whether to another social network or not.
  3. Continue to use Facebook, but take back some level of control of the experience.
I’m going to assume that you’re interested with Option 3.

What you need is a nifty little piece of software called Adblock Plus.  There are many programs that block advertisements on the web, but Adblock Plus is one of the best.  And completely free!  You can’t go wrong with it.  Adblock Plus is designed to be used with Mozilla Firefox, although there is a beta version for Google’s Chrome browser in the Chrome online store.  If you’re using Internet Explorer… well… you’re on your own, I’m sorry.

To download Adblock Plus for Mozilla Firefox, click here.
To download Adblock Plus for Google Chrome, click here.

Installing Adblock Plus is a piece of cake.  Just double click the installer and let it do its thing. It should only take a minute or two to install.  Once it’s complete you need to go into its preferences and click “Add Filter“.

To remove the new “Ticker” paste in: apps.facebook.com##DIV[class=”homeFixedTicker”]
To remove the horrible new “App Ticker” also add in: apps.facebook.com##DIV[class=”fixedAux”]

That’s it!  Click apply, and close the preferences.  You will need to restart your browser for these changes to take effect.  After that, you should not see any more annoying tickers on your Facebook page.  Or… you could just give up on Facebook and come over to Google+ like the rest of us!  🙂

And just incase you’re a little unsure about the Adblock Plus preferences, I’ve created a little video to help walk you through the process. Please note, there is no sound. I tried several times to walk through the process and was unhappy with my performance. I really need to practice speaking to “no one”. Also, after creating the video I see that it is either too small on the screen, or if you view it in full screen mode, appears blurry. I apologize for that, and will try to get that corrected at a future date. If anyone has any problems removing the Facebook ticker, and this tutorial post does not solve the issue, please feel free to contact me through the contact form. Thanks!
