I’ve noticed something over the last few months… and it shocks the hell out of me to say this but… I don’t really enjoy the taste of bacon anymore. WTF?!? And it really surprises me, because I don’t know where it came from! I’ve mentioned it to the guys at work, and other friends… do our tastes change as we get older? I think the answer is yes, but why now? Why bacon?
I first noticed at the start of the summer, when I was getting the kids every week for 3-4 days at a time. They always tend to get up ultra early, so I make sure that they have cereal available for breakfast. But I have always enjoyed making “Big Breakfast” so usually for one morning during every visit I would cook bacon and eggs, hash browns, toast, beans… Big Breakfast. Toward the end of the summer, I started to notice that I wasn’t enjoying the taste of bacon anymore. It wasn’t that the bacon had somehow changed. I had.
Now that the kids are back in school, I don’t see them as often as I did during the summer. I also haven’t bought bacon in well over a month… well, until Saturday because they were there. I cooked the pound of bacon with the intent on freezing some of it for sandwiches. That didn’t work. I had two pieces of it… the kids finished off the rest. And even those two pieces that I had, the only reason I finished them was because I had an egg and wanted something with it.
It’s not that I have anything against bacon. I know that it’s horrible for me, but that doesn’t stop me with anything else. I don’t mind cooking it. I like the smell of it. But when I put that piece in my mouth… It’s just not enjoyable. I’m fine if there’s a piece on a club sandwich, but I don’t seem to like eating bacon by itself anymore.
And I don’t know why.
If this is the start of a change in my tastes, I’m not looking forward to see what might be coming next. What if I wake up some morning and find that I don’t like steak anymore? Or turkey? Chocolate? Coke?!? Why couldn’t it be broccoli, or cauliflower…
I’ve had this blog post in mind for awhile. In fact, I’ve had the title scrawled on my whiteboard for weeks. That’s how I do things. Something pops into my head, and I write it across the whiteboard. I get some interesting looks sometimes… “Let’s Talk Bacon” in red marker.. Umm.. ok…
But seriously, am I the only person who likes maple bacon? Or maybe it’s a guy thing? I usually don’t bother to buy the maple bacon if I know that I’m going to be cooking it for someone else. It never seems to be a hit. I don’t understand it. It’s a very slight flavour, and I think one that enhances the taste, but oh well. Maybe it’s just me.
I’ve started buying the Olymel bacon that comes in 3 pre-packaged sections. It’s only 70 cents more, and I figured that was a small price to pay for not over-indulging on the stuff. If I’m cooking breakfast for a few people, I will use the regular bacon, but if I’m only making something for myself, the Olymel is definitely the way to go.
What’s definitely NOT the way to go is that Ready Crisp pre-cooked bacon from Maple Leaf! What a complete waste of money! The only reason I even tried it was because the grocery store had a deal on where it was free with the purchase of something else. OK, can’t go wrong there! I’ll try it!
5 seconds in the microwave (per piece) is all it takes. Why? Because it’s paper thin, and almost completely devoid of any taste! I was eating it by itself and I might as well have been chewing on cardboard. There’s no way that I could have been able to taste “bacon” had it actually been in a sandwich or something else. Do yourself a favour… stay away from this stuff. If you want to have pre-made bacon, then you’re better off just buying regular bacon and cooking up the whole thing, and storing it in the fridge to use as necessary.
But at least now I can erase my whiteboard and throw another idea up there!
