OK, so last week I wrote a post about my brand new Logitech Z523 computer speakers, and how much they sucked. Click here if you missed that. But let me just sum it up for you if you’re not interested in reading that other post. They sucked. They REALLY SUCKED! Sounded like I had my head in the toilet while listening. Yes, they were that bad.
So after talking to a few people with Altec Lansing speakers, I decided to take the Logitechs back and replace them with these little puppies.
I have to say this right up front… The big reason I originally went for the Logitechs rather than the Altecs has nothing to do with sound… I’m not a gigantic fan of the shape of the satellites. They look like flashlights turned upside down. The Logitechs look more like speakers in my traditional way of thinking. I know, I know… they’re speakers. Who cares what they look like? It’s how they sound, right? Yes.. to a certain extent… but all things being equal, my preference is the traditional looking speakers. In this case, though… things were not equal..
I listened to the demo speakers they had set up at Future Shop. They sounded good in the store. I looked for a demo of the Logitechs, but they didn’t have those ones set up. They had a much more expensive set of Logitechs, but not the Z523s. Coincidence? I think not.
So with both speaker boxes in my arms I went to the customer service desk. The nice girl asked me what was wrong with the Logitechs.
“They’re horrible!” I told her… and then to my surprise she said very quietly “Yeah… I know… you’re not the first person to bring them back.. I went online looking for reviews and they’re not very good.” Actually, to that point… on the Future Shop site, the Logitechs are rated higher than the Altecs… but I think there are a lot of Logitech employees out there writing reviews for their own stuff. That’s the only explanation I have.
So, what do I think of the Altec Lansings? Well.. aside from the upside down flashlight appearance.. I LOVE THEM! The bass is great… but the higher pitches are much clearer than the Logitechs. I can turn these up, and it doesn’t sound all muffled and gross. The price difference was $11 after tax. The best $11 I’ve spent in a long time!
And just to let the whole world know how much I love the new ones, I tweeted about it, and thew a shout out to my friend. That tweet got picked up by Bernice Cramer, VP Marketing and Product Mgt, who retweeted it. I know that it wasn’t a bot, because she fixed the spelling mistake, and made a slight edit to the original tweet. In the age of big companies who seem so out of touch with the Average Joe, I got a warm and fuzzy feeling when I saw this person retweet, and shout out to me. What about you, Logitech? Are you listening?
For a set of 2.1 speakers these Altec Lansings are fantastic. I can’t recommend them enough. $99 at Future Shop.
It’s been YEARS since I’ve bought computer speakers. I just kept taking my original pair with me from computer to computer, and then started using my laptop more, which didn’t need speakers. Then I bought my iMac, which has a decent set of built-in speakers.
Decent… but I wanted something with loud.
When I went to Future Shop on the weekend, I was determined not to leave that store without a set of 2.1 speakers in my hands. I told myself that I didn’t want to spend a ton of money… that I didn’t need to spend a ton of money. I wasn’t looking for perfection. I was looking for something better than built-in speakers. In my mind, there shouldn’t be a set of external speakers built anywhere that should not surpass what comes built-in.
Boy, was I wrong.
The Z523 system from Logitech costs a little over $100 with tax. That’s certainly not a top of the line speaker system, but it’s also not bottom of the barrel either. Well… that’s a great segway into my opinion of the Z523s… while they are loud, they sound like they’re sitting in the bottom of a barrel! The sound is very flat. It’s not crisp and clear at all. I tried adjusting the bass, but that didn’t make the sound any more clearer.
Logitech claims that these speakers offer 360 degree sound. That wasn’t really a deal-breaker for me, but there’s no way that I was getting sound from all angles. Had that been the only issue with them, I could over-look that. But with the flat sound that comes out of those satellites… back into the box they’re going when I get home!
