Don’t Buy Yourself Anything!
My mother used to drill that into our heads, and I can still remember more than one occassion when either my sister or I broke the Golden Rule. The closer that it got to Dec 25, the more important it was to not buy yourself anything, especially anything that you’d ever showed an interest in. Because, chances were, Mum had been listening and had quietly bought it and put it away as a gift. Even this year I was warned a few weeks ago to try to hold off buying things until after Christmas. (imagine the laughter I received when I asked if it was OK to buy that TV that I saw at FutureShop. Yeah, apparently Santa doesn’t think that I was that good this year! Too bad, because I never did end up with that TV.)
So imagine my frustration when told by someone that they had bought something today that just so happened to be exactly what I had bought them a couple of weeks ago. I should have just kept quiet and tried to return it, but I honestly didn’t think that it was something that could be returned. So then what? Well, I let my frustration get the better of me. It’s easy to see why. I’ve had this planned for awhile, and this is not the first Christmas gift disaster this month.
I can certainly appreciate the lesson my mother was trying to teach me.
