Tick Tock… Is That a Lyme in Your Pocket, Or…

Published July 16, 2010 - 2 Comments

I’ve never had “outdoor” cats before.  I’ve had cats who were previously strays that we’ve taken in, but never a cat that I would let out on a regular basis.  My grandmother’s cat is a little different, though.  She had been a stray, and sort of lived around the house for awhile, before eventually being brought inside.  But she still thinks that she’s an outdoor cat, and despite her advanced age, when she wants to bolt through the door, you can’t stop her.  Generally, she just goes out onto the deck to lay in the sun.  She seems so happy out there, and doesn’t take off, so I’ve started letting her go out on her own during the day.  I might have to rethink that though.

When she came in tonight, I noticed something dark on her back.  She’s pure white, so anything dark is gonna stand out.  I picked her up and looked at it.  It was a dark greyish bulb-like thing.

“What the hell is that??”  I asked her…  not really expecting a response…

Then I saw tiny little legs kicking…

A tick!  I’ve never seen a tick before, but they’re gross!  I was able to get it off of her.  The damn thing was full of blood.  I don’t know how long it takes one of those things to fill up, but it was pretty disgusting.  I checked her out afterward to see if there were any others.

I keep hearing the public safety spots on the radio talk about Lyme disease being in the area, and to check your clothing or animals for ticks if you’ve been in the woods.  Great.  That’s all I need.

So I guess that I’m going to have to keep an eye on her.  And I know that she’s not going to be very happy with me, but I don’t think that she’s going to have free reign to come and go as she pleases anymore.
