If you’ve ever watched Survivor, you’re probably familiar with the point in the game where the two dwindling tribes are forced to come together, and merge into a new and mightier tribe. All previous tribal loyalties are forgotten, and everyone works together for the prosperity of the new tribe. Or not.
That’s kinda what the modern blended family is like.
Yes, that’s right. Life has taken a turn once again. Where once there was one (me) and sometimes two, three, or four… but mainly one… now there are two and more often than not… four.. or even six! That’s six people fighting to use the bathroom in the morning. Six tooth brushes. Six pairs of shoes thrown inside the mudroom. Six place settings for breakfast, lunch, and supper. And yes, six personalities and egos to cram within the walls of an ever-increasingly cramped space. It’s really no wonder that Jan won’t come visit anymore.
But if I sound like I’m complaining, I’m not. It’s an adjustment for everyone involved, and we’re working our way through the growing pains. We’ve learned to space showers out. A second bathroom is in the works. We now have a dishwasher. We’ve been forced to downsize some of our non-necessities. Everyone is learning to lend a hand, even if raking the lawn is worse than death. And sometimes we even find a little time to have some fun. It’s definitely getting better.
The Tribe has spoken…
