At some point through the night I woke up to use the bathroom and heard what I thought was rain or freezing rain hitting the window. When my alarm went off at 5:15, I poked my head out to see white stuff coating the ground. Hmm… snow… It didn’t look too bad, though.
Well, looks can be deceiving…
It’s a good thing that I have snow tires on my car, because I know that I wouldn’t have made it very far. From the moment I pulled out of my driveway, my car was having a horrible time finding anything to grip. I noticed lights in my rearview mirror, which turned out to be a snowplow. Perfect. I pulled over at the first opportunity and let him pass. Things got considerably better at that point, but the visibility was still poor.
I wish I had a snowplow. They look like a lot of fun.
Unfortunately he wasn’t going nearly as far as I needed him to, and soon I was on the highway… the first car in a steady stream of lights, all presumably heading into work bright and early.
Now… I have proper winter tires on my car, but I was still having a hard time driving that highway. I was sliding from one side to the next, and only moving at 60 km/hr. It amazes me when people pull out to pass when the weather is that bad. Maybe they have studded tires? I don’t know. All I know is that I passed one SUV in the ditch… and as I was coming up to the toll bridge another SUV directly ahead of me suddenly spun out of control and ended up facing me. He managed to stay on the highway, and corrected himself after I passed.
Winter is here, folks… be careful out there!
